Now, on to our August Project, Magnetic Save the Date Cards!
Magnetic “Save the Date” Card Project

Wedding “save the date” magnets are a great way to announce your special day to your friends and family. The beautiful, personalized wedding keepsake gives your loved ones an easy way to keep track of the upcoming event by seeing it every day on their refrigerator. Now you can easily and less expensively make your own magnetic save the date card at home using DiscountCardstock.com’s newly added MagneCote® paper.
MagneCote has a slightly glossy bright white side with a brightness measure of 90. The other side is made with a proprietary magnetic coating. It works great with ink jet printers, especially with HP and Cannon printers. Both sides are printable, but to print on the magnetic side, you should use a light color that will contrast with the gray magnetic coating.
To make this “Save the Date” project, I opened Microsoft Word® on my computer, then went online and searched for a business card template that could be adapted to my purpose, but I was pleased to find that Word’s online template page (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CT010152732.aspx ) had a number of templates for “Save the Date” cards already. For this project, I chose the template found at (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CT010117264.aspx?tl=2#pg:5|ai:TC010367978| ).
I chose a template that is approximately the size of a business card because you use less of the MagneCote paper, but you can design your own card in whatever size you want, add pictures of you and your love; the possibilities are endless. The look you go for is entirely up to you!
Once I downloaded the template, I tweaked it a bit. I changed the month from November 2009 to August 2010, then I added the day of the week (Saturday) to the top of the calendar with the date. I also italicized and enlarged the font to 14 for the phrase “Save the Date.”

When I was done with my modifications, I was ready to print! When printing the page of cards (1) print on a regular piece of paper first so you can eyeball it and be sure you are happy with the proportions and look before printing on the MagneCote paper; (2) when you print a sheet, be sure to take it off the printer before the next sheet comes out and let it set a minute or two to allow the ink to set. We didn’t have smearing problems, but better safe than sorry!
In order to cut out the individual cards, I used a straight edge and an X-Acto knife. This was a no muss, no fuss, SIMPLE project. No gluing magnetic strips or sheets, no alignment issues between the printed sheet and the pressed on magnetic sheets, etc.
This template has 6 per page, so for 100 guests, divide 100 by 6 to determine how many sheets of theMagneCote you need. In this case, you’d need 17 sheets (rounded up from 16.67). The MagneCote comes in size 8.5×11 & 12×12 in packages of 10 sheets on our website.
If you have a couple of extra sheets, another fun idea is to make a “Just Married” magnetic sheet in the full 8.5×11 to put on your car door on your wedding day!
