Back-to-School Ensemble

Posh Yellow Crepe #65

Save up to 50%!

Sale ends 9/19/2011

Today’s project from DCS Designer Laura Williams.

To create these cute coordinated back-to-school projects, first dig through your recycling bin, garbage can, and junk drawer.  I love to reuse, and repurpose items, and I did a little bit of that on these projects.

For the pencil cup, I used an aluminum can, but you can also use a juice concentrate container, or any other container that’s the right size and shape.  (*I have a fabulous Pampered Chef can opener that removes the sharp edges on my cans – safety first!)

The backpack tag was created with a chipboard clothing tag.  I wasn’t sure what to do with it, but I knew I didn’t want to throw it out.  It was perfect for this project.  The chain also came from a clothing tag, but you could easily use ribbon or twine instead.

The notebook is a marble composition book, purchased last year when all of the back to school goodies went on clearance.  I probably paid ten cents for it.  So this project is definitely an inexpensive one!

The possibilities are endless when it comes to embellishing these projects.  I do have a few tips and tricks to get you started though.

The notebook:

Measure your notebook, not counting the binding.  It seemed easier to me, to just cover the front and leave the binding alone.  Be sure to get adhesive all the way to the edges and corners, to help with wear and tear. Cover the book with a base color, and then go crazy with decorations and embellishments! The twine is just tied around the cover of the book.  (A bookmark would be an adorable addition to this ensemble as well!)

The pencil cup:

Measure the height of your container, and then wrap cardstock around it.  I used two-sided tape, and I stretched a piece along the starting edge of cardstock to the can, and then another piece right along my ending-edge to the can.

The backpack tag:

Measure the tag, and cover with cardstock on one side.  Before you cover the back side, poke through the hole, so you can find it once it’s covered up! Then thread your chain, twine, or ribbon through.
